Ingredients

  • 4figs, fresh; halved lengthways, hard stalk ends trimmed
  • 4walnuts, halved; one half pressed into each fig
  • 150 mlwater
  • 60 gsugar, for syrup

Method

  1. 1

Cut off the hard stalk ends from the figs, then halve each fig lengthways.

  2. 2

Place the figs cut-side up in a small frying or sauté pan and pour the water around them.

  3. 3

Cook over medium heat until the figs are soft and cooked through, about 10–15 minutes. Transfer the figs to a serving dish.

  4. 4

Add the sugar to the red fig juice remaining in the pan over medium heat. Stir continuously until the juice thickens to a syrup, about 2–3 minutes. Remove from heat.

  5. 5

Press half a walnut into each fig half, then drizzle the syrup over the top. Serve warm or at room temperature.
